The rule for の: X の Y = Y of X

水の呼吸 = “breathing of water”. The particle の links two nouns, much like “of” or “’s” in English: first the owner, then の, then the thing owned. The same rule builds everyday phrases:

友達の家tomodachi no iea friend’s house
先生の本sensei no honthe teacher’s book

Taking apart “呼吸”

呼吸 (kokyū, breathing) is made of two kanji: 呼 (to exhale / to call) and 吸 (to inhale). Together they make a full breath. Japanese has many two-kanji words like this: 日本 (Nihon, Japan) = sun + origin, and 学生 (gakusei, student) = study + life.

The sword: 刀 and 刃

刀 (katana, sword) and 刃 (yaiba, blade) look very alike: 刃 is 刀 with an extra mark showing where the edge is. That is why the title 鬼滅の刃 uses 刃: the “edge” of the sword.

Numbers: 壱, 弐, 参

In the numbering of fighting forms you see 壱ノ型 (ichi no kata, “first form”). 壱 弐 参 are formal or old-style numerals (1, 2, 3) used in place of the ordinary 一 二 三. Everyday Japanese uses the ordinary numbers; see Japanese numbers 1 to 100.

4 ways to learn kanji

  1. Tie it to the story: 水 = the water of Water Breathing.
  2. Spot the parts: even a complex kanji such as 鬼 has components.
  3. Learn in words: remember 水曜日 (suiyōbi, Wednesday) rather than 水 alone.
  4. 3–5 kanji a day: write, say and review the next day.

Kanji take time and are best tackled after basic hiragana and katakana. To start, see How to Learn Japanese.
