Anime words in real life: 3 cautions

  1. ばか (baka), ore and omae can be rude when said to strangers or elders.
  2. Affectionate endings like -chan and -kun should not be attached to just anyone. Read Japanese honorifics explained.
  3. At the office or in formal settings, you need polite language, which anime often lacks.

How to remember them

  • Make one sentence for each word: kyō wa tanoshii desu (I’m having fun today).
  • Connect a word to the scene where you heard it, but write the meaning down too.
  • Review old words once a week.

Frequently asked questions

What does senpai mean?

先輩 (senpai) means someone more senior than you at school, college or work. It is about who joined first more than about age.

What does kawaii mean?

かわいい (kawaii) means “cute”. It is used for children, animals, clothes and things.

Are these words used in everyday Japanese?

Most are (sugoi, daijōbu, arigatō), but some (baka, omae, ikuzo) are not right everywhere. Pay attention to context and to who you are talking to.
