5 simple rules for speaking in an interview

  • Use short, clear sentences. Trying to build long sentences leads to mistakes.
  • Think for two seconds before you answer. Silence is not bad.
  • Use openers such as “I think”, “I believe” and “In my experience”.
  • Do not memorise words alone; learn them in sentences, as in the table above.
  • Practise three times in front of a mirror or while recording yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to improve English for interviews?

Answers to common interview questions can get much better with 2 to 4 weeks of daily practice. Fluency takes longer, so speaking a little every day matters.

Is memorising words enough?

No. Learn a word with a sentence and its pronunciation. Say the example sentence above aloud.
